SPIKEKEY WINS FIRST INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENT

After an adventurous season, we headed to Puerto Plato, Dominican Republic, to compete in the East End International Tour Championship. (November 8-11, 2008) The winning teams from the qualifying regional tournaments were invited to compete for the grand prize and the Caribbean Challenge trophy.... The entire trip was first class from start to finish. We were greeted at the airport with welcoming smiles and the ride back to the resort was very scenic and beautiful. After adjusting to the new climate and environment, which is not too different from Florida, we made our way to the beach for a solid day of training. The competition bell rang at 9am Saturday and the official tournament started on Playa Dorada Beach, a region of Puerto Plata. Ten courts were setup for simultaneous play, and the teams were broken into two pools. Each team played one other in their designated pool to determine the seeds for the following day. SpikeKey earned the second position overall. We had a long day of excellent competition ending with an undefeated record which built our confidence for Sunday play. On Saturday night, the Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism and Puerto Plata Association hosted a celebration for the players, media, and special guests.

We dined on delicious Caribbean food and danced the Salsa and Tango with the professional dancers. The competition continued on Sunday and the weather was absolutely beautiful. Beach volleyball is a very popular sport in the Caribbean, and the sidelines were crowded with eager fans and supporters which made the games even more exciting. We had some very close and suspenseful matches, but nothing compared to earning our first international tournament win after defeating a French-Canadian team. We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect ending to such a magical season. We would like to thank the East End Volleyball Tour and the Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association for hosting a world class beach volleyball tournament. We look forward to the next Caribbean tournament! We both have won numerous championships throughout our athletic careers, but this International Caribbean Trophy represents the promising future that lies ahead and reminds us that the off season is where REAL CHAMPIONS are made.
